Gallery (Syphilis)

“Syphilis- 1999) Acrylic and pen on canvas

The subject matter at the centre of this piece is female sexual representation and the inequalities that women face within a patriarchal society. The painting expresses the gender inequalities that exist between men and women. It shows how men have ‘sexual norms’ that are celebrated, yet women who have similar sexual behaviours are oppressed and demonised. In this instance, the use of a malignant blood disease is used to portray the spread of inequality and the difficulties faced in eradicating it.
